What to do when in an Auto Accident

An auto accident can be an upsetting experience and thinking clearly can be difficult. If we can remember just a few things at the scene we can improve our chances for a smooth auto body repair.
Collision repair and what auto body shop to take your vehical to for repair may be the last thing on your mind at the time. But following a few rules at the time can save you money and a great deal of headache.
What To DO
- Move all vehicles involved out of traffic as soon as it is safe
- Make sure all ignitions are off
- Assess involved parties for physical injuries
- Call 911 to report the accident and fro medical services if needed
- Check road for objects that may cause unsafe conditions for traffic
- Write down the names and contact information of all involved parties as well as witnesses. This also includes people who were passengers in the cars involved in the accident.
- It is a good idea at this time (or as soon as possible) to make a diagram of the accident showing how it occurred and where each passenger was seated. Note the date, time and weather conditions as well.
- If there are witnesses present ask for their account of the accident and make a note
- Do not discuss fault related to the accident. And do not discuss your account of the accident with anyone but the police. The “no fault” in no fault auto insurance applies only to personal injury. You may be found at fault in an accident and face some liability so it is a good idea to be careful with what you say.
- Exchange insurance information and notify your insurance company as soon as possible
